Elder Abuse Prevention Strategy - Information Sessions

AHA was appointed by the Department of Human Services (DHS) to develop, promote and deliver 45 information sessions in rural, regional and metropolitan locations across Victoria.

The Victorian Government has developed Practice Guidelines for health services and community agencies for the prevention of elder abuse (With Respect to Age - 2009). This Guide defines elder abuse as -“Any act occurring within a relationship where there is an implication of trust, which results in harm to an older person.” The information sessions were based on the Guide.

The Guide aims to provide service providers with the necessary skills and tools to assess and identify incidents of abuse or suspicions of abuse and to develop and implement care plans to address any identified issues. It contains information about different types of elder abuse; questions to assess and identify abuse; and a range of management strategies and resources.

The project was completed November 2009.
