Mike has an Honours degree in Physiology and Microbiology and specialises in complex evaluations and performance reviews across the health sector. He has extensive experience in interrogating complex data sources to develop evidence-based policies, strategies and programs.

Following his Honours degree, he conducted postgraduate clinical research at Monash University, which included healthcare ethics and social research. This led to an appointment as a senior policy advisor for the Victorian Department of Health.

Prior to joining AHA, he was Director, Performance Audits, for the Victorian Auditor-General. His focus was on patient safety and quality of care, the efficiency of ED and in-patient care, and cross-agency health initiatives. These reviews and audits were well-received by parliament and the healthcare sector – leading to significant change across the system. Projects led by Mike include:

  • Victorian data integrity strategy for DHHS and Victorian Agency for Health Information (VAHI). This strategy covered all the major data collections submitted by health services to DHHS, including those that capture activity and cost of acute and sub-acute care.
  • Patient safety in Public hospitals performance audit, which examined DHHS’ quality and safety performance measures and the patient incident reporting system.
